Recipients Announced for the Midway University/Bardstown Collection Scholarships
Midway, KY (04/22/2024) — Two outstanding Nelson County students will be attending Midway University as first-time freshmen in the Fall 2024 thanks, in part, to the success of the 2023 Bardstown Collection.
Each recipient will receive $5,000 per year, renewable up to four years, to support their undergraduate studies with a minor in Bourbon Studies.
Both scholarship winners, Hallie Hurst from Bethlehem High School, and Samuel Sanders from Bardstown High School, embody the spirit of their community and demonstrate a deep appreciation for the bourbon industry's significance in Nelson County.
Hallie, raised on a farm in Nelson County, recognizes the pivotal role bourbon plays in shaping the community and plans to leverage her education at Midway University to promote bourbon production and employment opportunities within the industry.
Samuel, a proud Bardstown native and baseball enthusiast, aspires to revolutionize the sales and marketing landscape in the bourbon industry. With a major in Business and a minor in Bourbon Studies, Samuel aims to create positive change within his community and mentor others with minority heritage to explore opportunities in the bourbon industry.
Six distilleries located in Bardstown, renowned as the Bourbon Capital of the World, generously contributed to this scholarship through the 2023 Bardstown Collection. Crafted by local distilleries, this collection featured specially-selected expressions available exclusively on-site and as part of this unique collection.
Dr. Mark Gill, Dean of the School of Business, Equine and Sport Studies at Midway University, expresses gratitude for the support of the distilleries in providing students from Nelson County access to quality education.
"With the ever-growing interest in Bourbon tourism, Midway University is well-positioned to provide students the education necessary for job opportunities in those professions," says Dr. Gill.
Midway University, located just 15 minutes from Lexington, Kentucky, offers a diverse range of undergraduate programs, including traditional semester programs, accelerated formats, and fully online options. The university's commitment to career-focused majors, such as Business Administration and Marketing Communications, is further enhanced by the addition of the Bourbon Studies minor. This innovative program provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the bourbon industry, preparing them for entry-level employment in bourbon and tourism-related fields.
