Midway University Launches Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Degree to Prepare the Next Generation of Educators

The program is designed for individuals who hold a bachelor's degree and want to become certified teachers in Kentucky's P-12 classrooms

Midway, KY (10/27/2025) — Midway University is proud to announce the launch of its new Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree program, designed for individuals who hold a bachelor's degree and want to become certified teachers in Kentucky's P-12 classrooms.

This graduate program provides both traditional and alternative pathways to teacher certification, giving candidates the flexibility to pursue their teaching credentials through either a full-time student teaching experience or while already employed in a certified teaching role under Kentucky's Option 6 Alternative Route.

"This program offers a powerful opportunity for professionals who are passionate about education but may not have followed a traditional path to teaching," said Dr. Ellen Bloomfield, Dean, School of Arts & Sciences at Midway University. "Through our MAT program, students can immediately make a difference in classrooms across Kentucky while completing a graduate degree that leads to full certification and Rank II status."

The MAT program is offered in an online format to meet the needs of working adults. Students will engage in pedagogical training, field experiences, and mentorship to develop effective classroom skills and leadership capabilities.

The program prepares candidates for initial certification in several high-demand areas, including:

  • P-12 Certification: Agriculture Education, Spanish Teaching
  • Middle Grades & Secondary Certification: Biology, Business Education, Chemistry, English Language Arts, Mathematics, Social Studies
  • Additional Endorsements: Opportunities in Special Education

Midway's Option 6 Alternative Route allows qualified candidates who have secured full-time teaching positions to begin teaching immediately while completing MAT coursework. These candidates receive dual mentorship-from both a school-based mentor and a Midway University faculty mentor-to ensure professional growth and classroom success.

"The MAT reflects Midway's mission to provide flexible, career-ready education that meets Kentucky's workforce needs," said Dr. Tim Campbell, Vice President of Academic Affairs. "Our Department of Teacher Education continues to lead in developing innovative programs that prepare effective, confident educators."
