Midway University Announces Dr. Hannah Freeman as Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences

Midway, KY (08/19/2026) — MIDWAY, Ky. - Midway University announces the appointment of Dr. Hannah Freeman as the Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences. As Dean, Dr. Freeman will provide strategic direction for the school, supporting faculty excellence, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, strengthening academic programs, and advancing Midway University's mission of preparing students for meaningful careers and lives of purpose.

"Throughout her career, Dr. Freeman has led faculty development initiatives, secured competitive grants supporting innovative teaching and curriculum development, and championed high-impact educational practices that enhance student learning and faculty engagement," said Dr. Timothy Campbell, Vice President for Academic Affairs. "We are very fortunate to have her leading our School of Arts & Sciences."

Dr. Freeman brings extensive experience in academic leadership, faculty development, and higher education administration to the role. She joined Midway University four years ago as a Professor of English and has served as Chair of the Department of Humanities and as interim Dean of the School of Arts & Sciences.

Dr. Freeman earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a Master of Arts in English from Western Carolina University, and a Ph.D. in English, specializing in nineteenth-century British literature from the University of Kentucky. She also holds graduate certificates in Gender and Women's Studies and College Teaching and Learning from the University of Kentucky.

Before joining Midway University, Dr. Freeman served at the University of Pikeville, where she advanced from assistant professor to full professor and later served as Humanities Division Chair. In that role, she oversaw six academic majors, more than 20 faculty and adjunct instructors, strategic planning, curriculum development, budgeting, and program assessment.

An accomplished academic leader, Dr. Freeman has participated in nationally recognized leadership programs, including the Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences Seminar for Department Chairs, the Kentucky American Council on Education Women in Leadership Series, the Council for Independent Colleges Workshop for Division Chairs, and the Modern Language Association's Association of Departments of English and Foreign Languages Summer Seminar.

Midway University is a private, coeducational university with a working horse farm located in Midway, Kentucky. Chartered in 1847, Midway serves more than 2,000 students in traditional semester undergraduate programs, accelerated format evening and online undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as dual credit programs. Midway University is known for offering affordable, career-focused majors such as education, business, nursing, equine studies, exercise science, sport management, psychology, criminal justice, and computer science.
